On 14th march, first class and introduction of SULAM project were held by Dr Rafeah, SULAM Course Coordinator. Interesting facts and knowledge were shared by Dr Rafeah through pictures, videos, and links from the previous SULAM project. We were asked to form a group of 6 in which recommended from the same district, but my group consist of 6 members from different district and state. We decided to go for e-SULAM project which is an online project. Difficulties and challenges we faced to form this group are indescribable. People left and out, uncountable messages were sent as well as we take longer time to form a group and completed 6 passionate group members.

We started the conversation with group leader selection at WhatsApp group. Ain’s determination on updating everything happens during the after-class question and answer session with Dr Rafeah attract us to nominate her as the group leader while Aidel is the co-leader. I do not want to feel left out from the conversation, so I decided to be the secretary. I admit that I am lacking with the skills and knowledge on writing reports or preparing meeting’s minute, but I challenged myself to went out from my comfort zone and try my best to done it well. I am very glad because Lucy voluntarily raising her voice to help me out.

Our first meeting which is on 21st march was full of discussion, argues and interesting ideas from each of the member. It started awkwardly because all of us does not know each other yet. I can sense that our leader, Ain is having some difficulties to start the discussion, so I decided to do and talk some funny stuff to break the ice by acting weirdly or be extra energetic on that night. Luckily, it works. A really packed class on that day does not break our excitement and passion to further discussing everything that needs to be done for nearly two hours.

Within that hour, we decided to choose green waste management as our theme. Although we chose this theme because it seems interesting and new, but I have my own reason as I personally have experienced poor green waste management from pruning before. My father is a huge fan of fruits, so he planted them at our backyard. The production of fruits decreases from time to time so pruning needs to be done. After that process, the green waste was piling up and looks like a mess. Something needs to be done because if we just leave it or throw it to some unsuitable place, it is like we are inviting the snakes to come and cause danger to other people. If the piling up green waste were thrown at the landfills, it will take much space and cause difficulties to other people.

From the theme we chose, we thought that we could make some improvement for green waste management in Malaysia by exposing about composting through our Instagram account, Green Gables. Firstly, we need to briefly introduce about green waste. What is green waste? Can we see green waste in our home? Have we ever seen green waste at the playground, school or at our backyard? From these questions, society shall realize that green waste is everywhere in our community, and something should be done to reduce green waste. Secondly, we will learn on how to make kitchen waste compost for 30 days. All progress will be updated on our Instagram account. Society who watches our progress will eventually know the process and could done it at home with their family. In my opinion, this project is very suitable for mothers out there because caladium planting is popular nowadays.

We were actively brainstorming ideas through WhatsApp group and by google meet. All members attend the meeting on time. Although this SULAM project seems scary due to the load of work we saw from the eLeap, but I am very glad to meet such wonderful personalities of my group member. We coped well, helped, and supported each other. I think this is a good start for this e-SULAM project.
